Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden: A Haven of Biodiversity and Conservation

The Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden, which was opened in 2014, is a reflection of Sri Lanka’s dedication to the conservation of its rich biodiversity. Situated in Illukowita, Avissawella, this 42-hectare garden is a center for research, conservation, and education, specializing in the distinctive flora of the island’s wet zone.

Historical Background
Before it was converted into a botanical garden, the land was utilized for rubber and tea estates under the estate “Pannaagula.” In 2008, the abandoned estate was acquired by the Land Reform Commission, and development began. By late 2014, the garden was formally opened to the public and became the fifth botanical garden in Sri Lanka and the first dedicated exclusively to wet zone flora conservation.

Mission and Objectives
The prime aim of the Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden is the ex-situ conservation of wet zone plant species, particularly the endemic and endangered ones in the Sinharaja Rain Forest region. The garden also aims to promote floriculture, conduct research, and provide facilities for educational purposes to students and researchers.
